Gregory in 1911 Ireland
The 1911 Census recorded 605 people named Gregory in Ireland; roughly one in every 7,300 people carried the name. The name was split fairly evenly between men and women: 310 men and 294 women. (A small number, 1, had no sex recorded.)

Dublin had the largest share of Gregorys, 22% (133 people). Next came Wicklow (85), Antrim (68), Down (54) and Louth (49).

The average Gregory in 1911 was 27.9 years old, 26.4 for men and 29.4 for women; a touch younger than the national averages of 29.6 for men and 30.5 for women. That low figure reflects just how many children there were in Edwardian Ireland, along with high infant mortality and the limits of public health at the time. For comparison, average life expectancy in Ireland today is around 83.
Gregory literacy in 1911
Of the Gregorys whose literacy was recorded, 72.8% could both read and write, 4.8% could read but not write, and 22.4% could do neither. Women came out slightly ahead, 77% reading and writing against 68.8% of men. Bear in mind these figures include young children; the census itself only counted people aged nine and over when calculating illiteracy, on the grounds that it was unfair to label a child illiterate before they'd had a chance to learn.
Gregory common first names
The most common male names were John (34), Thomas, James, William and Patrick. For women it was Mary (28), followed by Margaret, Catherine, Elizabeth and Bridget.
Gregory occupations in 1911
The most common entry on a Gregory's census form was "Scholar"; 20.7% (125) were children at school. Among the rest, the most common occupations were textile worker (4.8%), general labourer (4.5%), farmer (4%) and farm labourer (3%). Grouped by sector, agriculture accounted for 8.6% of all Gregorys, followed by textiles & clothing, general labourers and domestic service.
What religion is Gregory?
Most Gregorys, 60.5%, were Roman Catholic. The remainder were mostly Anglican (34.2%), Presbyterian (1.5%), Moravian (1.3%) and Plymouth Brethren (1.2%).
