That low figure reflects just how many children there were in Edwardian Ireland, along with high infant mortality and the limits of public health at the time. Grew literacy in 1911
Of the Grews whose literacy was recorded, 72% could both read and write, 12.2% could read but not write, and 15.9% could do neither. Men came out slightly ahead, 78.6% reading and writing against 68.5% of women. Bear in mind these figures include young children; the census itself only counted people aged nine and over when calculating illiteracy, on the grounds that it was unfair to label a child illiterate before they'd had a chance to learn.

The most common male names were James (8), Patrick, John, Peter and Edward. For women it was Catherine (7), followed by Ellen, Mary, Annie and Bridget.
Grew occupations in 1911
The most common entry on a Grew's census form was "Scholar"; 22.4% (19) were children at school. Among the rest, the most common occupations were textile worker (18.8%), farmer (10.6%), general labourer (4.7%) and seamstress (2.4%). Grouped by sector, textiles & clothing accounted for 21.2% of all Grews, followed by agriculture, general labourers and manufacturing & trades.
What religion is Grew?
Grews were overwhelmingly Roman Catholic, 97.6% of them. The remainder were mostly Unitarian (1.2%).
