Grey in 1911 Ireland
The 1911 Census recorded 550 people named Grey in Ireland; roughly one in every 8,000 people carried the name. The name was split fairly evenly between men and women: 261 men and 288 women. (A small number, 1, had no sex recorded.)
Counties with Grey in Ireland
Dublin had the largest share of Greys, 15.5% (85 people). Next came Antrim (65), Sligo (42), Tipperary (40) and Cork (38).
Grey average age in 1911
The average Grey in 1911 was 29.5 years old, 28.7 for men and 30.2 for women; almost exactly in line with the national averages of 29.6 for men and 30.5 for women. That low figure reflects just how many children there were in Edwardian Ireland, along with high infant mortality and the limits of public health at the time. For comparison, average life expectancy in Ireland today is around 83.
Grey literacy in 1911
Of the Greys whose literacy was recorded, 81.8% could both read and write, 4.7% could read but not write, and 13.6% could do neither. The figures were much the same for men and women. Bear in mind these figures include young children; the census itself only counted people aged nine and over when calculating illiteracy, on the grounds that it was unfair to label a child illiterate before they'd had a chance to learn.
Grey common first names
The most common male names were John (33), James, Thomas, William and Patrick. For women it was Mary (32), followed by Annie, Bridget, Margaret and Ellen; matching the national top five exactly.
Grey occupations in 1911
The most common entry on a Grey's census form was "Scholar"; 23.3% (128) were children at school. Among the rest, the most common occupations were farmer (9.1%), domestic servant (4%), farm labourer (3.1%) and general labourer (2.9%). Grouped by sector, agriculture accounted for 13.1% of all Greys, followed by domestic service, textiles & clothing and retail & commerce.
What religion is Grey?
Most Greys, 58.7%, were Roman Catholic. The remainder were mostly Anglican (26.9%), Presbyterian (10.5%), Methodist (0.9%) and Baptist (0.2%).
