The 1911 Census recorded 297 people named Gribbin in Ireland; roughly one in every 15,000 people carried the name. The name was split fairly evenly between men and women: 149 men and 146 women. (A small number, 2, had no sex recorded.)

Down was Gribbin country: 31.3% of them (93 people) lived there in 1911. Next came Antrim (84), Armagh (38), Derry (36) and Roscommon (21).

The average Gribbin in 1911 was 30.0 years old, 27.2 for men and 32.8 for women; almost exactly in line with the national averages of 29.6 for men and 30.5 for women. That low figure reflects just how many children there were in Edwardian Ireland, along with high infant mortality and the limits of public health at the time. For comparison, average life expectancy in Ireland today is around 83.
Gribbin literacy in 1911
Of the Gribbins whose literacy was recorded, 74.2% could both read and write, 5.5% could read but not write, and 20.3% could do neither. Women came out slightly ahead, 76.9% reading and writing against 71.6% of men. Bear in mind these figures include young children; the census itself only counted people aged nine and over when calculating illiteracy, on the grounds that it was unfair to label a child illiterate before they'd had a chance to learn.
Gribbin common first names
The most common male names were John (20), Patrick, James, Thomas and Henry. For women it was Mary (24), followed by Bridget, Catherine, Margaret and Elizabeth.
Gribbin occupations in 1911
The most common entry on a Gribbin's census form was "Scholar"; 19.9% (59) were children at school. Among the rest, the most common occupations were farmer (11.1%), textile worker (7.7%), farm labourer (4%) and general labourer (3.7%). Grouped by sector, agriculture accounted for 15.5% of all Gribbins, followed by textiles & clothing, domestic service and general labourers.
What religion is Gribbin?
Gribbins were predominantly Roman Catholic (79.5%). The remainder were mostly Anglican (11.8%), Presbyterian (6.7%) and Unitarian (0.3%).
