The 1911 Census recorded 312 people named Gribbon in Ireland; roughly one in every 14,000 people carried the name. The name was split fairly evenly between men and women: 152 men and 160 women.

Down was Gribbon country: 34% of them (106 people) lived there in 1911. Next came Antrim (84), Derry (82), Armagh (16) and Dublin (10).

The average Gribbon in 1911 was 30.7 years old, 31.7 for men and 29.7 for women; almost exactly in line with the national averages of 29.6 for men and 30.5 for women. That low figure reflects just how many children there were in Edwardian Ireland, along with high infant mortality and the limits of public health at the time. For comparison, average life expectancy in Ireland today is around 83.
Gribbon literacy in 1911
Of the Gribbons whose literacy was recorded, 64.5% could both read and write, 9.8% could read but not write, and 25.7% could do neither. The figures were much the same for men and women. Bear in mind these figures include young children; the census itself only counted people aged nine and over when calculating illiteracy, on the grounds that it was unfair to label a child illiterate before they'd had a chance to learn.
Gribbon common first names
The most common male names were John (24), Patrick, James, Thomas and Joseph. For women it was Mary (22), followed by Rose, Bridget, Catherine and Sarah.
Gribbon occupations in 1911
The most common entry on a Gribbon's census form was "Scholar"; 22.4% (70) were children at school. Among the rest, the most common occupations were farmer (14.1%), farm labourer (6.1%), general labourer (6.1%) and textile worker (4.8%). Grouped by sector, agriculture accounted for 20.2% of all Gribbons, followed by textiles & clothing, general labourers and domestic service.
What religion is Gribbon?
Gribbons were predominantly Roman Catholic (86.5%). The remainder were mostly Anglican (6.4%), Plymouth Brethren (2.9%), Baptist (1.3%) and Presbyterian (1.3%).
