The 1911 Census recorded 690 people named Griffith in Ireland; roughly one in every 6,400 people carried the name. The name was split fairly evenly between men and women: 320 men and 367 women. (A small number, 3, had no sex recorded.)

Dublin had the largest share of Griffiths, 19.3% (133 people). Next came Donegal (105), Kilkenny (67), Mayo (61) and Antrim (37).

The average Griffith in 1911 was 32.1 years old, 32.1 for men and 32.2 for women; slightly older than the national averages of 29.6 for men and 30.5 for women. That low figure reflects just how many children there were in Edwardian Ireland, along with high infant mortality and the limits of public health at the time. For comparison, average life expectancy in Ireland today is around 83.
Griffith literacy in 1911
Of the Griffiths whose literacy was recorded, 82.5% could both read and write, 4.4% could read but not write, and 13.1% could do neither. Men came out slightly ahead, 83.9% reading and writing against 81.2% of women. Bear in mind these figures include young children; the census itself only counted people aged nine and over when calculating illiteracy, on the grounds that it was unfair to label a child illiterate before they'd had a chance to learn.
Griffith common first names
The most common male names were John (45), Thomas, William, James and Patrick. For women it was Mary (33), followed by Margaret, Annie, Mary Jane and Jane.
Griffith occupations in 1911
The most common entry on a Griffith's census form was "Scholar"; 20.7% (143) were children at school. Among the rest, the most common occupations were farmer (14.3%), shopkeeper / shop assistant / dealer (3.8%), farm labourer (2.3%) and clerk / office worker (1.7%). Grouped by sector, agriculture accounted for 17% of all Griffiths, followed by retail & commerce, textiles & clothing and domestic service.
What religion is Griffith?
Most Griffiths, 53.8%, were Anglican. The remainder were mostly Roman Catholic (37.7%), Presbyterian (2.6%), Baptist (2.3%) and Methodist (1.6%).
