The 1911 Census recorded 1,536 people named Grogan in Ireland, about 0.035% of everyone living in the country at the time and the 563rd most common surname overall. The name was split fairly evenly between men and women: 794 men and 740 women. (A small number, 2, had no sex recorded.)
Counties with Grogan in Ireland
Mayo had the largest share of Grogans, 16% (246 people). Next came Dublin (214), Offaly (137), Tipperary (130) and Roscommon (95).
Grogan average age in 1911
The average Grogan in 1911 was 29.8 years old, 29.5 for men and 30.2 for women; almost exactly in line with the national averages of 29.6 for men and 30.5 for women. That low figure reflects just how many children there were in Edwardian Ireland, along with high infant mortality and the limits of public health at the time. For comparison, average life expectancy in Ireland today is around 83.
Grogan literacy in 1911
Of the Grogans whose literacy was recorded, 77.2% could both read and write, 4.2% could read but not write, and 18.5% could do neither. Men came out slightly ahead, 78.2% reading and writing against 76.2% of women. Bear in mind these figures include young children; the census itself only counted people aged nine and over when calculating illiteracy, on the grounds that it was unfair to label a child illiterate before they'd had a chance to learn.
Grogan common first names
The most common male names were John (113), Patrick, Michael, James and Thomas; the same five names that topped the list nationally. For women it was Mary (116), followed by Bridget, Margaret, Catherine and Ellen.
Grogan occupations in 1911
The most common entry on a Grogan's census form was "Scholar"; 22.3% (342) were children at school. Among the rest, the most common occupations were farmer (16%), farm labourer (4.3%), general labourer (3.8%) and domestic servant (2.7%). Grouped by sector, agriculture accounted for 20.8% of all Grogans, followed by domestic service, general labourers and textiles & clothing.
What religion is Grogan?
Grogans were overwhelmingly Roman Catholic, 95.3% of them. The remainder were mostly Anglican (3.1%), Presbyterian (0.7%) and Agnostic (0.1%).
