Of the Growneys whose literacy was recorded, 75% could both read and write, 5.8% could read but not write, and 19.2% could do neither. Women came out slightly ahead, 82.1% reading and writing against 66.7% of men. Bear in mind these figures include young children; the census itself only counted people aged nine and over when calculating illiteracy, on the grounds that it was unfair to label a child illiterate before they'd had a chance to learn.

Among the rest, the most common occupations were farmer (11.1%), herd / dairy worker (3.7%), domestic servant (1.9%) and farm labourer (1.9%). Grouped by sector, agriculture accounted for 18.5% of all Growneys, followed by domestic service, textiles & clothing and building & construction.
