Gubbins literacy in 1911
Of the Gubbinses whose literacy was recorded, 75% could both read and write, 5.6% could read but not write, and 19.4% could do neither. Women came out slightly ahead, 80.2% reading and writing against 69.5% of men. Bear in mind these figures include young children; the census itself only counted people aged nine and over when calculating illiteracy, on the grounds that it was unfair to label a child illiterate before they'd had a chance to learn.

The most common male names were James (16), Michael, John, William and Patrick. For women it was Mary (16), followed by Bridget, Ellen, Kate and Margaret.

The most common entry on a Gubbins's census form was "Scholar"; 15.7% (32) were children at school. Among the rest, the most common occupations were farmer (12.7%), farm labourer (9.8%), no occupation / dependent (4.4%) and domestic servant (2.9%). Grouped by sector, agriculture accounted for 22.5% of all Gubbinses, followed by no occupation / dependent, domestic service and textiles & clothing.
What religion is Gubbins?
Gubbinses were predominantly Roman Catholic (87.7%). The remainder were mostly Anglican (11.8%).
