The 1911 Census recorded 453 people named Gunn in Ireland; roughly one in every 9,700 people carried the name. The name was split fairly evenly between men and women: 217 men and 235 women. (A small number, 1, had no sex recorded.)

Fermanagh was Gunn country: 40% of them (181 people) lived there in 1911. Next came Dublin (56), Monaghan (48), Antrim (31) and Cork (23).

The average Gunn in 1911 was 33.3 years old, 32.0 for men and 34.6 for women; noticeably older than the national averages of 29.6 for men and 30.5 for women. That low figure reflects just how many children there were in Edwardian Ireland, along with high infant mortality and the limits of public health at the time. For comparison, average life expectancy in Ireland today is around 83.
Gunn literacy in 1911
Of the Gunns whose literacy was recorded, 78.8% could both read and write, 4.4% could read but not write, and 16.7% could do neither. Men came out slightly ahead, 85.8% reading and writing against 72.6% of women. Bear in mind these figures include young children; the census itself only counted people aged nine and over when calculating illiteracy, on the grounds that it was unfair to label a child illiterate before they'd had a chance to learn.
Gunn common first names
The most common male names were John (33), Thomas, Patrick, James and William. For women it was Mary (29), followed by Anne, Elizabeth, Kate and Annie.
Gunn occupations in 1911
The most common entry on a Gunn's census form was "Scholar"; 17.4% (79) were children at school. Among the rest, the most common occupations were farmer (15.2%), farm labourer (3.3%), shopkeeper / shop assistant / dealer (3.1%) and general labourer (2.9%). Grouped by sector, agriculture accounted for 19.2% of all Gunns, followed by textiles & clothing, retail & commerce and domestic service.
What religion is Gunn?
Gunns were predominantly Roman Catholic (83.7%). The remainder were mostly Anglican (8.6%), Presbyterian (6.2%), Methodist (0.2%) and Salvation Army (0.2%).
