That low figure reflects just how many children there were in Edwardian Ireland, along with high infant mortality and the limits of public health at the time. For comparison, average life expectancy in Ireland today is around 83.
Gurney literacy in 1911
Of the Gurneys whose literacy was recorded, 82.5% could both read and write, 8.8% could read but not write, and 8.8% could do neither. Men came out slightly ahead, 91.7% reading and writing against 75% of women. Bear in mind these figures include young children; the census itself only counted people aged nine and over when calculating illiteracy, on the grounds that it was unfair to label a child illiterate before they'd had a chance to learn.

The most common male names were Hugh (7), William, John, James and Elizabeth. For women it was Margaret (4), followed by Sarah, Maggie, Catherine and Lizzie.

The most common entry on a Gurney's census form was "Scholar"; 24.1% (14) were children at school. Among the rest, the most common occupations were farmer (17.2%), other maker / factory worker (10.3%), mason / bricklayer (5.2%) and baker / confectioner (3.4%). Grouped by sector, agriculture accounted for 17.2% of all Gurneys, followed by manufacturing & trades, textiles & clothing and building & construction.
What religion is Gurney?
Gurneys were predominantly Anglican (89.7%). The remainder were mostly Roman Catholic (10.3%).
