That low figure reflects just how many children there were in Edwardian Ireland, along with high infant mortality and the limits of public health at the time. For comparison, average life expectancy in Ireland today is around 83.
Haddock literacy in 1911
Of the Haddocks whose literacy was recorded, 75.3% could both read and write, 4.1% could read but not write, and 20.6% could do neither. Men came out slightly ahead, 77.7% reading and writing against 73% of women. Bear in mind these figures include young children; the census itself only counted people aged nine and over when calculating illiteracy, on the grounds that it was unfair to label a child illiterate before they'd had a chance to learn.

The most common male names were John (23), William, Thomas, James and Samuel. For women it was Mary (10), followed by Sarah, Annie, Lizzie and Maggie.
Haddock occupations in 1911
The most common entry on a Haddock's census form was "Scholar"; 24.3% (73) were children at school. Among the rest, the most common occupations were textile worker (20.7%), general labourer (6.3%), farmer (3%) and other maker / factory worker (3%). Grouped by sector, textiles & clothing accounted for 23% of all Haddocks, followed by general labourers, agriculture and domestic service.
What religion is Haddock?
Most Haddocks, 53.3%, were Anglican. The remainder were mostly Roman Catholic (26.7%), Presbyterian (9.7%), Methodist (6.3%) and Quaker (2.3%).
