Hale in 1911 Ireland
The 1911 Census recorded 336 people named Hale in Ireland; roughly one in every 13,000 people carried the name. The name was split fairly evenly between men and women: 161 men and 173 women. (A small number, 2, had no sex recorded.)
Counties with Hale in Ireland
Down had the largest share of Hales, 24.4% (82 people). Next came Antrim (71), Waterford (37), Sligo (36) and Dublin (31).
Hale average age in 1911
The average Hale in 1911 was 30.3 years old, 27.9 for men and 32.5 for women; almost exactly in line with the national averages of 29.6 for men and 30.5 for women. That low figure reflects just how many children there were in Edwardian Ireland, along with high infant mortality and the limits of public health at the time. For comparison, average life expectancy in Ireland today is around 83.
Hale literacy in 1911
Of the Hales whose literacy was recorded, 84.2% could both read and write, 3% could read but not write, and 12.7% could do neither. The figures were much the same for men and women. Bear in mind these figures include young children; the census itself only counted people aged nine and over when calculating illiteracy, on the grounds that it was unfair to label a child illiterate before they'd had a chance to learn.
Hale common first names
The most common male names were John (18), James, William, Thomas and Joseph. For women it was Mary (19), followed by Annie, Bridget, Margaret and Elizabeth.
Hale occupations in 1911
The most common entry on a Hale's census form was "Scholar"; 19.6% (66) were children at school. Among the rest, the most common occupations were farmer (11.9%), general labourer (4.8%), textile worker (3.6%) and farm labourer (3%). Grouped by sector, agriculture accounted for 15.8% of all Hales, followed by textiles & clothing, general labourers and domestic service.
What religion is Hale?
The largest religious group among Hales was Anglican, at 43.8%. The remainder were mostly Roman Catholic (38.1%), Presbyterian (8.9%), Methodist (3.6%) and Agnostic (1.8%).
