Grouped by sector, agriculture accounted for 17.8% of all Hamills, followed by textiles & clothing, general labourers and domestic service.

Most Hamills, 63.1%, were Roman Catholic. The remainder were mostly Presbyterian (21.8%), Anglican (12.1%), Methodist (1.4%) and Plymouth Brethren (0.5%).
