The 1911 Census recorded 8,178 people named Hamilton in Ireland, about 0.187% of everyone living in the country at the time and the 75th most common surname overall. The name was split fairly evenly between men and women: 3,938 men and 4,227 women. (A small number, 13, had no sex recorded.)

Among the rest, the most common occupations were farmer (10.3%), textile worker (5.1%), farm labourer (3.6%) and general labourer (3.4%). Grouped by sector, agriculture accounted for 14.4% of all Hamiltons, followed by textiles & clothing, domestic service and general labourers.
What religion is Hamilton?
The largest religious group among Hamiltons was Presbyterian, at 39.5%. The remainder were mostly Anglican (37.8%), Roman Catholic (16.1%), Methodist (2.3%) and Plymouth Brethren (1%).
