The average Haney in 1911 was 34.9 years old, 33.8 for men and 35.7 for women; noticeably older than the national averages of 29.6 for men and 30.5 for women. That low figure reflects just how many children there were in Edwardian Ireland, along with high infant mortality and the limits of public health at the time. For comparison, average life expectancy in Ireland today is around 83.
Haney literacy in 1911
Of the Haneys whose literacy was recorded, 72% could both read and write, 2% could read but not write, and 26% could do neither. The figures were much the same for men and women. Bear in mind these figures include young children; the census itself only counted people aged nine and over when calculating illiteracy, on the grounds that it was unfair to label a child illiterate before they'd had a chance to learn.

The most common male names were Thomas (5), John, Bernard, James and Richard. For women it was Mary (6), followed by Bridget, Kate, Anne and Margaret.

The most common occupation among Haneys was farmer, 16% of them (8 people). Next came scholar / student (16%), domestic servant (6%), farm labourer (6%) and shopkeeper / shop assistant / dealer (6%). Grouped by sector, agriculture accounted for 22% of all Haneys, followed by domestic service, retail & commerce and textiles & clothing.
What religion is Haney?
Haneys were overwhelmingly Roman Catholic, 94% of them. The remainder were mostly Plymouth Brethren (4%) and Presbyterian (2%).
