Of the Hanneys whose literacy was recorded, 83.1% could both read and write, 3.4% could read but not write, and 13.5% could do neither. The figures were much the same for men and women. Bear in mind these figures include young children; the census itself only counted people aged nine and over when calculating illiteracy, on the grounds that it was unfair to label a child illiterate before they'd had a chance to learn.

The most common male names were John (9), Patrick, Michael, Denis and Thomas. For women it was Mary (7), followed by Bridget, Mary Anne, Annie and Elizabeth.

Among the rest, the most common occupations were farmer (13.7%), farm labourer (5.3%), butcher (4.2%) and general labourer (3.2%). Grouped by sector, agriculture accounted for 21.1% of all Hanneys, followed by food & drink, retail & commerce and transport.

Hanneys were predominantly Roman Catholic (88.4%). The remainder were mostly Anglican (7.4%).
