That low figure reflects just how many children there were in Edwardian Ireland, along with high infant mortality and the limits of public health at the time. Hanway literacy in 1911
Of the Hanways whose literacy was recorded, 75% could both read and write, 3.8% could read but not write, and 21.2% could do neither. Women came out slightly ahead, 77.8% reading and writing against 72% of men. Bear in mind these figures include young children; the census itself only counted people aged nine and over when calculating illiteracy, on the grounds that it was unfair to label a child illiterate before they'd had a chance to learn.

The most common entry on a Hanway's census form was "Scholar"; 22.6% (12) were children at school. Among the rest, the most common occupations were clerk / office worker (7.5%), general labourer (5.7%), domestic servant (3.8%) and fisherman (3.8%). Grouped by sector, clerical & administration accounted for 7.5% of all Hanways, followed by domestic service, general labourers and transport.
What religion is Hanway?
Hanways were overwhelmingly Roman Catholic, 98.1% of them. The remainder were mostly Anglican (1.9%).
