That low figure reflects just how many children there were in Edwardian Ireland, along with high infant mortality and the limits of public health at the time. Harold literacy in 1911
Of the Harolds whose literacy was recorded, 78.5% could both read and write, 3.7% could read but not write, and 17.8% could do neither. Women came out slightly ahead, 80.1% reading and writing against 77% of men. Bear in mind these figures include young children; the census itself only counted people aged nine and over when calculating illiteracy, on the grounds that it was unfair to label a child illiterate before they'd had a chance to learn.

The most common male names were John (31), James, William, Michael and Patrick. For women it was Mary (27), followed by Margaret, Catherine, Ellen and Bridget.
Harold occupations in 1911
The most common entry on a Harold's census form was "Scholar"; 21.3% (88) were children at school. Among the rest, the most common occupations were farmer (11.6%), general labourer (5.6%), domestic servant (2.9%) and textile worker (2.7%). Grouped by sector, agriculture accounted for 14% of all Harolds, followed by general labourers, domestic service and textiles & clothing.
What religion is Harold?
Harolds were predominantly Roman Catholic (88.4%). The remainder were mostly Anglican (8.5%), Methodist (1.4%) and Presbyterian (1.2%).
