The 1911 Census recorded 1,188 people named Hart in Ireland, about 0.027% of everyone living in the country at the time and the 692nd most common surname overall. The name was split fairly evenly between men and women: 566 men and 622 women.

Dublin had the largest share of Harts, 19.3% (229 people). Next came Antrim (207), Down (129), Cork (99) and Armagh (91).

The average Hart in 1911 was 31.1 years old, 31.3 for men and 31.0 for women; slightly older than the national averages of 29.6 for men and 30.5 for women. That low figure reflects just how many children there were in Edwardian Ireland, along with high infant mortality and the limits of public health at the time. Hart literacy in 1911
Of the Harts whose literacy was recorded, 76.3% could both read and write, 5.1% could read but not write, and 18.6% could do neither. Men came out slightly ahead, 77.6% reading and writing against 75.1% of women. Bear in mind these figures include young children; the census itself only counted people aged nine and over when calculating illiteracy, on the grounds that it was unfair to label a child illiterate before they'd had a chance to learn.

The most common male names were John (96), James, Thomas, William and Patrick. For women it was Mary (92), followed by Margaret, Bridget, Annie and Sarah.

The most common entry on a Hart's census form was "Scholar"; 17.2% (204) were children at school. Among the rest, the most common occupations were farmer (9%), general labourer (6.6%), textile worker (3.2%) and domestic servant (3%). Grouped by sector, agriculture accounted for 11.9% of all Harts, followed by general labourers, domestic service and textiles & clothing.
What religion is Hart?
Harts were predominantly Roman Catholic (71.7%). The remainder were mostly Anglican (13.2%), Presbyterian (12.1%), Methodist (0.8%) and Baptist (0.3%).
