The 1911 Census recorded 290 people named Hasson in Ireland; roughly one in every 15,000 people carried the name. The name was split fairly evenly between men and women: 148 men and 142 women.

The Hassons were heavily concentrated in Derry, home to 95.2% of them (276 people). Next came Antrim (6), Down (3), Tyrone (2) and Donegal (1).

The average Hasson in 1911 was 32.2 years old, 30.8 for men and 33.7 for women; slightly older than the national averages of 29.6 for men and 30.5 for women. That low figure reflects just how many children there were in Edwardian Ireland, along with high infant mortality and the limits of public health at the time. For comparison, average life expectancy in Ireland today is around 83.
Hasson literacy in 1911
Of the Hassons whose literacy was recorded, 69.9% could both read and write, 9.6% could read but not write, and 20.6% could do neither. Women came out slightly ahead, 73.5% reading and writing against 66.4% of men. Bear in mind these figures include young children; the census itself only counted people aged nine and over when calculating illiteracy, on the grounds that it was unfair to label a child illiterate before they'd had a chance to learn.
Hasson common first names
The most common male names were James (17), John, William, Thomas and Bernard. For women it was Mary (24), followed by Catherine, Annie, Sarah and Bridget.

The most common entry on a Hasson's census form was "Scholar"; 21.4% (62) were children at school. Among the rest, the most common occupations were farmer (19%), farm labourer (4.8%), seamstress (3.1%) and general labourer (2.1%). Grouped by sector, agriculture accounted for 23.8% of all Hassons, followed by textiles & clothing, domestic service and general labourers.
What religion is Hasson?
Hassons were predominantly Roman Catholic (85.9%). The remainder were mostly Presbyterian (8.3%), Anglican (5.5%) and Methodist (0.3%).
