The 1911 Census recorded 356 people named Hawe in Ireland; roughly one in every 12,000 people carried the name. The name was split fairly evenly between men and women: 181 men and 175 women.

Of the Hawes whose literacy was recorded, 78.9% could both read and write, 4.1% could read but not write, and 17% could do neither. The figures were much the same for men and women. Bear in mind these figures include young children; the census itself only counted people aged nine and over when calculating illiteracy, on the grounds that it was unfair to label a child illiterate before they'd had a chance to learn.

The most common male names were John (22), William, James, Thomas and Patrick. For women it was Mary (23), followed by Margaret, Ellen, Bridget and Kate.

The most common entry on a Hawe's census form was "Scholar"; 24.2% (86) were children at school. Among the rest, the most common occupations were farmer (23.9%), shopkeeper / shop assistant / dealer (2.5%), farm labourer (2%) and general labourer (2%). Grouped by sector, agriculture accounted for 26.1% of all Hawes, followed by retail & commerce, textiles & clothing and domestic service.
What religion is Hawe?
Most Hawes, 66.6%, were Roman Catholic. The remainder were mostly Anglican (16.9%), Presbyterian (14.9%) and Methodist (1.4%).
