Of the Hawkeses whose literacy was recorded, 83.3% could both read and write, 2.2% could read but not write, and 14.5% could do neither. Women came out slightly ahead, 85.7% reading and writing against 80.2% of men. Bear in mind these figures include young children; the census itself only counted people aged nine and over when calculating illiteracy, on the grounds that it was unfair to label a child illiterate before they'd had a chance to learn.

The most common male names were John (11), William, Michael, Patrick and Samuel. For women it was Mary (11), followed by Maggie, Margaret, Annie and Elizabeth.

The most common occupation among Hawkeses was farmer, 19.4% of them (36 people). Next came scholar / student (12.9%), domestic servant (4.3%), general labourer (3.2%) and farm labourer (2.7%). Grouped by sector, agriculture accounted for 22.6% of all Hawkeses, followed by domestic service, textiles & clothing and general labourers.
