The average Heggarty in 1911 was 28.0 years old, 25.4 for men and 31.0 for women; a touch younger than the national averages of 29.6 for men and 30.5 for women. That low figure reflects just how many children there were in Edwardian Ireland, along with high infant mortality and the limits of public health at the time. Of the Heggartys whose literacy was recorded, 63.8% could both read and write, 11.4% could read but not write, and 24.8% could do neither. Men came out slightly ahead, 67.2% reading and writing against 59.6% of women. Bear in mind these figures include young children; the census itself only counted people aged nine and over when calculating illiteracy, on the grounds that it was unfair to label a child illiterate before they'd had a chance to learn.

Among the rest, the most common occupations were farmer (14%), farm labourer (5.6%), builder / contractor (1.9%) and clerk / office worker (1.9%). Grouped by sector, agriculture accounted for 19.6% of all Heggartys, followed by domestic service, textiles & clothing and building & construction.

Most Heggartys, 64.5%, were Roman Catholic. The remainder were mostly Presbyterian (25.2%) and Anglican (9.3%).
