Henry in 1911 Ireland
The 1911 Census recorded 5,209 people named Henry in Ireland, about 0.119% of everyone living in the country at the time and the 149th most common surname overall. The name was split fairly evenly between men and women: 2,535 men and 2,663 women. (A small number, 11, had no sex recorded.)
Counties with Henry in Ireland
Antrim had the largest share of Henrys, 19.6% (1,019 people). Next came Derry (792), Mayo (676), Sligo (666) and Dublin (335).
Henry average age in 1911
The average Henry in 1911 was 30.9 years old, 30.0 for men and 31.7 for women; almost exactly in line with the national averages of 29.6 for men and 30.5 for women. That low figure reflects just how many children there were in Edwardian Ireland, along with high infant mortality and the limits of public health at the time. For comparison, average life expectancy in Ireland today is around 83.
Henry literacy in 1911
Of the Henrys whose literacy was recorded, 77.3% could both read and write, 4.5% could read but not write, and 18.2% could do neither. Men came out slightly ahead, 78.4% reading and writing against 76.2% of women. Bear in mind these figures include young children; the census itself only counted people aged nine and over when calculating illiteracy, on the grounds that it was unfair to label a child illiterate before they'd had a chance to learn.
Henry common first names
The most common male names were John (272), James, Patrick, Thomas and William. For women it was Mary (330), followed by Bridget, Margaret, Annie and Elizabeth.
Henry occupations in 1911
The most common entry on a Henry's census form was "Scholar"; 20.6% (1,074) were children at school. Among the rest, the most common occupations were farmer (16.8%), general labourer (4.2%), textile worker (3.5%) and farm labourer (3%). Grouped by sector, agriculture accounted for 20.3% of all Henrys, followed by textiles & clothing, general labourers and domestic service.
What religion is Henry?
Most Henrys, 53.4%, were Roman Catholic. The remainder were mostly Presbyterian (23.8%), Anglican (13.9%), Methodist (2.6%) and Baptist (0.4%).
