The 1911 Census recorded 215 people named Heraty in Ireland; roughly one in every 20,000 people carried the name. The name was split fairly evenly between men and women: 112 men and 103 women.

The Heratys were heavily concentrated in Mayo, home to 92.6% of them (199 people). Next came Longford (5), Sligo (5), Kerry (3) and Antrim (1).

Of the Heratys whose literacy was recorded, 77.9% could both read and write, 2.9% could read but not write, and 19.2% could do neither. Men came out slightly ahead, 80.7% reading and writing against 74.7% of women. Bear in mind these figures include young children; the census itself only counted people aged nine and over when calculating illiteracy, on the grounds that it was unfair to label a child illiterate before they'd had a chance to learn.

The most common male names were Patrick (19), John, Michael, Thomas and Peter. For women it was Mary (24), followed by Bridget, Anne, Catherine and Annie.

The most common entry on a Heraty's census form was "Scholar"; 26.5% (57) were children at school. Among the rest, the most common occupations were farmer (24.7%), shopkeeper / shop assistant / dealer (2.8%), farm labourer (2.3%) and general labourer (2.3%). Grouped by sector, agriculture accounted for 27.4% of all Heratys, followed by retail & commerce, domestic service and general labourers.
