The 1911 Census recorded 53 people named Herd in Ireland; roughly one in every 83,000 people carried the name. The name was split fairly evenly between men and women: 27 men and 26 women.

The Herds were heavily concentrated in Antrim, home to 64.2% of them (34 people). Next came Down (12), Tyrone (2), Wexford (2) and Galway (1).

The average Herd in 1911 was 35.3 years old, 33.6 for men and 37.1 for women; noticeably older than the national averages of 29.6 for men and 30.5 for women. That low figure reflects just how many children there were in Edwardian Ireland, along with high infant mortality and the limits of public health at the time. For comparison, average life expectancy in Ireland today is around 83.
Herd literacy in 1911
Of the Herds whose literacy was recorded, 83% could both read and write, 3.8% could read but not write, and 13.2% could do neither. Women came out slightly ahead, 84.6% reading and writing against 81.5% of men. Bear in mind these figures include young children; the census itself only counted people aged nine and over when calculating illiteracy, on the grounds that it was unfair to label a child illiterate before they'd had a chance to learn.
Herd common first names
The most common male names were Thomas (4), Robert, James, Adam Sloan and Albert. For women it was Elizabeth (3), followed by Matilda, Mary, Ann and Annie Maida.
Herd occupations in 1911
The most common entry on a Herd's census form was "Scholar"; 15.1% (8) were children at school. Among the rest, the most common occupations were textile worker (9.4%), farm labourer (5.7%), dressmaker / milliner (3.8%) and general labourer (3.8%). Grouped by sector, textiles & clothing accounted for 13.2% of all Herds, followed by agriculture, manufacturing & trades and metal & engineering.
What religion is Herd?
The largest religious group among Herds was Anglican, at 47.2%. The remainder were mostly Presbyterian (45.3%), Baptist (3.8%), Methodist (1.9%) and Roman Catholic (1.9%).
