Heron in 1911 Ireland
The 1911 Census recorded 690 people named Heron in Ireland; roughly one in every 6,400 people carried the name. The name was split fairly evenly between men and women: 326 men and 362 women. (A small number, 2, had no sex recorded.)
Counties with Heron in Ireland
Down was Heron country: 30.4% of them (210 people) lived there in 1911. Next came Antrim (110), Donegal (97), Derry (86) and Dublin (84).
Heron average age in 1911
The average Heron in 1911 was 31.0 years old, 29.9 for men and 31.9 for women; almost exactly in line with the national averages of 29.6 for men and 30.5 for women. That low figure reflects just how many children there were in Edwardian Ireland, along with high infant mortality and the limits of public health at the time. For comparison, average life expectancy in Ireland today is around 83.
Heron literacy in 1911
Of the Herons whose literacy was recorded, 80% could both read and write, 4.1% could read but not write, and 15.8% could do neither. The figures were much the same for men and women. Bear in mind these figures include young children; the census itself only counted people aged nine and over when calculating illiteracy, on the grounds that it was unfair to label a child illiterate before they'd had a chance to learn.
Heron common first names
The most common male names were John (45), James, William, Patrick and Samuel. For women it was Mary (45), followed by Ellen, Elizabeth, Bridget and Sarah.
Heron occupations in 1911
The most common entry on a Heron's census form was "Scholar"; 19.1% (132) were children at school. Among the rest, the most common occupations were farmer (10.4%), textile worker (4.1%), shopkeeper / shop assistant / dealer (3.3%) and domestic servant (2.9%). Grouped by sector, agriculture accounted for 12.9% of all Herons, followed by textiles & clothing, retail & commerce and domestic service.
What religion is Heron?
The largest religious group among Herons was Roman Catholic, at 39.3%. The remainder were mostly Presbyterian (32.2%), Anglican (20.6%), Methodist (3.5%) and Unitarian (2%).
