That low figure reflects just how many children there were in Edwardian Ireland, along with high infant mortality and the limits of public health at the time. Of the Hickies whose literacy was recorded, 84.4% could both read and write, 2.2% could read but not write, and 13.4% could do neither. Women came out slightly ahead, 88.3% reading and writing against 80.4% of men. Bear in mind these figures include young children; the census itself only counted people aged nine and over when calculating illiteracy, on the grounds that it was unfair to label a child illiterate before they'd had a chance to learn.

The most common male names were John (14), William, James, Patrick and Thomas. For women it was Mary (8), followed by Bridget, Margaret, Julia and Annie.

The most common entry on a Hickie's census form was "Scholar"; 30.2% (57) were children at school. Among the rest, the most common occupations were farmer (5.8%), domestic servant (5.3%), shopkeeper / shop assistant / dealer (4.2%) and farm labourer (3.7%). Grouped by sector, agriculture accounted for 9.5% of all Hickies, followed by domestic service, retail & commerce and professional.
What religion is Hickie?
Hickies were predominantly Roman Catholic (87.8%). The remainder were mostly Anglican (9.5%) and Non-Conformist (2.6%).
