The 1911 Census recorded 441 people named Higginson in Ireland; roughly one in every 10,000 people carried the name. The name was split fairly evenly between men and women: 202 men and 235 women. (A small number, 4, had no sex recorded.)

The Higginsons were heavily concentrated in Antrim, home to 70.3% of them (310 people). Next came Down (52), Kildare (22), Dublin (20) and Meath (9).

The average Higginson in 1911 was 27.4 years old, 26.1 for men and 28.5 for women; a touch younger than the national averages of 29.6 for men and 30.5 for women. That low figure reflects just how many children there were in Edwardian Ireland, along with high infant mortality and the limits of public health at the time. For comparison, average life expectancy in Ireland today is around 83.
Higginson literacy in 1911
Of the Higginsons whose literacy was recorded, 76.7% could both read and write, 4.9% could read but not write, and 18.4% could do neither. The figures were much the same for men and women. Bear in mind these figures include young children; the census itself only counted people aged nine and over when calculating illiteracy, on the grounds that it was unfair to label a child illiterate before they'd had a chance to learn.

The most common male names were William (20), John, James, Thomas and George. For women it was Mary (15), followed by Jane, Sarah, Annie and Elizabeth.

Among the rest, the most common occupations were textile worker (8.2%), general labourer (4.3%), farm labourer (3.2%) and shopkeeper / shop assistant / dealer (3.2%). Grouped by sector, textiles & clothing accounted for 10.7% of all Higginsons, followed by agriculture, general labourers and retail & commerce.
What religion is Higginson?
Most Higginsons, 62.6%, were Anglican. The remainder were mostly Presbyterian (15.6%), Roman Catholic (6.3%), Moravian (5.4%) and Methodist (5.2%).
