That low figure reflects just how many children there were in Edwardian Ireland, along with high infant mortality and the limits of public health at the time. Of the Hintons whose literacy was recorded, 73.4% could both read and write, 1.6% could read but not write, and 25% could do neither. Women came out slightly ahead, 78.4% reading and writing against 66.7% of men. Bear in mind these figures include young children; the census itself only counted people aged nine and over when calculating illiteracy, on the grounds that it was unfair to label a child illiterate before they'd had a chance to learn.

Among the rest, the most common occupations were textile worker (12.3%), domestic servant (4.6%), metal worker / engineer (4.6%) and other maker / factory worker (4.6%). Grouped by sector, textiles & clothing accounted for 15.4% of all Hintons, followed by domestic service, manufacturing & trades and metal & engineering.
What religion is Hinton?
Most Hintons, 50.8%, were Anglican. The remainder were mostly Presbyterian (26.2%), Methodist (15.4%), Roman Catholic (6.2%) and Plymouth Brethren (1.5%).
