Women came out slightly ahead, 96.3% reading and writing against 92.3% of men. Bear in mind these figures include young children; the census itself only counted people aged nine and over when calculating illiteracy, on the grounds that it was unfair to label a child illiterate before they'd had a chance to learn.

Among the rest, the most common occupations were farmer (17%), clerk / office worker (5.7%), domestic servant (3.8%) and post office worker (3.8%). Grouped by sector, agriculture accounted for 17% of all Hoffmans, followed by domestic service, clerical & administration and public service & defence.

Hoffmans were predominantly Anglican (71.7%). The remainder were mostly Methodist (15.1%) and Roman Catholic (11.3%).
