Of the Hollingers whose literacy was recorded, 80.4% could both read and write, 6.2% could read but not write, and 13.4% could do neither. Women came out slightly ahead, 86.8% reading and writing against 72.7% of men. Bear in mind these figures include young children; the census itself only counted people aged nine and over when calculating illiteracy, on the grounds that it was unfair to label a child illiterate before they'd had a chance to learn.

The most common male names were James (8), John, Joseph, Robert and George. For women it was Jane (6), followed by Mary, Elizabeth, Maggie and Margaret.

The most common entry on a Hollinger's census form was "Scholar"; 29.7% (30) were children at school. Among the rest, the most common occupations were farmer (11.9%), textile worker (9.9%), carpenter / joiner (2%) and clerk / office worker (2%). Grouped by sector, agriculture accounted for 12.9% of all Hollingers, followed by textiles & clothing, building & construction and clerical & administration.
What religion is Hollinger?
Hollingers were predominantly Presbyterian (74.3%). The remainder were mostly Anglican (18.8%), Roman Catholic (5%) and Methodist (2%).
