The 1911 Census recorded 332 people named Howell in Ireland; roughly one in every 13,000 people carried the name. The name was split fairly evenly between men and women: 163 men and 169 women.

Dublin had the largest share of Howells, 18.7% (62 people). Next came Cork (56), Wexford (53), Antrim (38) and Cavan (30).

The average Howell in 1911 was 29.4 years old, 28.9 for men and 29.9 for women; almost exactly in line with the national averages of 29.6 for men and 30.5 for women. That low figure reflects just how many children there were in Edwardian Ireland, along with high infant mortality and the limits of public health at the time. For comparison, average life expectancy in Ireland today is around 83.
Howell literacy in 1911
Of the Howells whose literacy was recorded, 84.2% could both read and write, 1.3% could read but not write, and 14.2% could do neither. The figures were much the same for men and women. Bear in mind these figures include young children; the census itself only counted people aged nine and over when calculating illiteracy, on the grounds that it was unfair to label a child illiterate before they'd had a chance to learn.

The most common male names were James (16), William, Patrick, George and John. For women it was Mary (21), followed by Margaret, Ellen, Sarah and Bridget.

The most common entry on a Howell's census form was "Scholar"; 20.2% (67) were children at school. Among the rest, the most common occupations were farmer (12%), general labourer (4.5%), domestic servant (4.2%) and farm labourer (2.4%). Grouped by sector, agriculture accounted for 14.5% of all Howells, followed by domestic service, general labourers and retail & commerce.
What religion is Howell?
Most Howells, 53.3%, were Roman Catholic. The remainder were mostly Anglican (41.9%) and Presbyterian (3%).
