The 1911 Census recorded 178 people named Howlin in Ireland; roughly one in every 25,000 people carried the name. The name was split fairly evenly between men and women: 94 men and 83 women. (A small number, 1, had no sex recorded.)

The Howlins were heavily concentrated in Wexford, home to 84.3% of them (150 people). Next came Dublin (15), Cork (9), Waterford (3) and Meath (1).

The average Howlin in 1911 was 34.1 years old, 32.6 for men and 35.8 for women; noticeably older than the national averages of 29.6 for men and 30.5 for women. That low figure reflects just how many children there were in Edwardian Ireland, along with high infant mortality and the limits of public health at the time. For comparison, average life expectancy in Ireland today is around 83.
Howlin literacy in 1911
Of the Howlins whose literacy was recorded, 85.5% could both read and write, 3.6% could read but not write, and 10.9% could do neither. Women came out slightly ahead, 88.5% reading and writing against 82.8% of men. Bear in mind these figures include young children; the census itself only counted people aged nine and over when calculating illiteracy, on the grounds that it was unfair to label a child illiterate before they'd had a chance to learn.
Howlin common first names
The most common male names were James (19), John, Patrick, Edward and Michael. For women it was Mary (16), followed by Bridget, Catherine, Margaret and Ellen.
Howlin occupations in 1911
The most common entry on a Howlin's census form was "Scholar"; 11.2% (20) were children at school. Among the rest, the most common occupations were farm labourer (10.1%), farmer (9.6%), general labourer (6.2%) and domestic servant (4.5%). Grouped by sector, agriculture accounted for 20.8% of all Howlins, followed by domestic service, general labourers and textiles & clothing.
What religion is Howlin?
Howlins were predominantly Roman Catholic (88.8%). The remainder were mostly Plymouth Brethren (4.5%) and Anglican (2.2%).
