That low figure reflects just how many children there were in Edwardian Ireland, along with high infant mortality and the limits of public health at the time. Of the Hoyneses whose literacy was recorded, 76.1% could both read and write, 2.8% could read but not write, and 21.1% could do neither. Men came out slightly ahead, 82.1% reading and writing against 72.1% of women. Bear in mind these figures include young children; the census itself only counted people aged nine and over when calculating illiteracy, on the grounds that it was unfair to label a child illiterate before they'd had a chance to learn.

Among the rest, the most common occupations were farmer (9.2%), domestic servant (6.6%), farm labourer (6.6%) and maid (2.6%). Grouped by sector, agriculture accounted for 15.8% of all Hoyneses, followed by domestic service, retired & pensioners and transport.
