Hull in 1911 Ireland
The 1911 Census recorded 662 people named Hull in Ireland; roughly one in every 6,600 people carried the name. The name was split fairly evenly between men and women: 298 men and 363 women. (A small number, 1, had no sex recorded.)
Counties with Hull in Ireland
The Hulls were heavily concentrated in Antrim, home to 62.2% of them (412 people). Next came Down (136), Derry (42), Armagh (21) and Dublin (17).
Hull average age in 1911
The average Hull in 1911 was 27.6 years old, 25.6 for men and 29.3 for women; a touch younger than the national averages of 29.6 for men and 30.5 for women. That low figure reflects just how many children there were in Edwardian Ireland, along with high infant mortality and the limits of public health at the time. For comparison, average life expectancy in Ireland today is around 83.
Hull literacy in 1911
Of the Hulls whose literacy was recorded, 77.1% could both read and write, 3.3% could read but not write, and 19.6% could do neither. The figures were much the same for men and women. Bear in mind these figures include young children; the census itself only counted people aged nine and over when calculating illiteracy, on the grounds that it was unfair to label a child illiterate before they'd had a chance to learn.
Hull common first names
The most common male names were John (32), James, William, Robert and George. For women it was Mary (25), followed by Elizabeth, Sarah, Annie and Maggie.
Hull occupations in 1911
The most common entry on a Hull's census form was "Scholar"; 22.8% (151) were children at school. Among the rest, the most common occupations were textile worker (8.9%), general labourer (3.8%), farmer (2.9%) and farm labourer (2.7%). Grouped by sector, textiles & clothing accounted for 12.8% of all Hulls, followed by agriculture, domestic service and general labourers.
What religion is Hull?
Most Hulls, 64.4%, were Anglican. The remainder were mostly Presbyterian (19.8%), Roman Catholic (5.1%), Methodist (3.6%) and Plymouth Brethren (1.4%).
