The 1911 Census recorded 4,586 people named Hurley in Ireland, about 0.105% of everyone living in the country at the time and the 173rd most common surname overall. The name was split fairly evenly between men and women: 2,289 men and 2,290 women. (A small number, 7, had no sex recorded.)

The Hurleys were heavily concentrated in Cork, home to 63.6% of them (2,917 people). Next came Kerry (337), Dublin (216), Limerick (215) and Waterford (181).

The average Hurley in 1911 was 29.3 years old, 28.9 for men and 29.7 for women; almost exactly in line with the national averages of 29.6 for men and 30.5 for women. That low figure reflects just how many children there were in Edwardian Ireland, along with high infant mortality and the limits of public health at the time. For comparison, average life expectancy in Ireland today is around 83.

Men came out slightly ahead, 80.7% reading and writing against 77.8% of women. Bear in mind these figures include young children; the census itself only counted people aged nine and over when calculating illiteracy, on the grounds that it was unfair to label a child illiterate before they'd had a chance to learn.

Among the rest, the most common occupations were farmer (16.2%), farm labourer (5%), general labourer (4.2%) and domestic servant (2.8%). Grouped by sector, agriculture accounted for 22.1% of all Hurleys, followed by general labourers, domestic service and retail & commerce.

Hurleys were overwhelmingly Roman Catholic, 98.6% of them. The remainder were mostly Anglican (0.8%).
