I in 1911 Ireland
The 1911 Census recorded 289 people named I in Ireland; roughly one in every 15,000 people carried the name. There were noticeably more men than women recorded: 193 men to 82 women. (A small number, 14, had no sex recorded.)
Counties with I in Ireland
Dublin had the largest share of Is, 21.8% (63 people). Next came Antrim (46), Cork (29), Kildare (22) and Down (17).

I average age in 1911
The average I in 1911 was 36.1 years old, 35.3 for men and 40.5 for women; noticeably older than the national averages of 29.6 for men and 30.5 for women. That low figure reflects just how many children there were in Edwardian Ireland, along with high infant mortality and the limits of public health at the time. For comparison, average life expectancy in Ireland today is around 83.
I literacy in 1911
Of the Is whose literacy was recorded, 81.4% could both read and write, 3.4% could read but not write, and 15.2% could do neither. Men came out slightly ahead, 81.9% reading and writing against 76.4% of women. Bear in mind these figures include young children; the census itself only counted people aged nine and over when calculating illiteracy, on the grounds that it was unfair to label a child illiterate before they'd had a chance to learn.
I common first names
The most common male names were J (48), W, I, R and M. For women it was M (23), followed by E, J, A and S.
I occupations in 1911
The most common occupation among Is was general labourer, 16.6% of them (48 people). Next came farmer (9.3%), scholar / student (6.2%), textile worker (5.5%) and domestic servant (5.2%). Grouped by sector, general labourers accounted for 16.6% of all Is, followed by agriculture, domestic service and textiles & clothing.
What religion is I?
The largest religious group among Is was Roman Catholic, at 40.5%. The remainder were mostly Anglican (39.8%), Presbyterian (11.1%), Methodist (2.1%) and Baptist (0.3%).
