The 1911 Census recorded 544 people named Ireland in Ireland; roughly one in every 8,100 people carried the name. The name was split fairly evenly between men and women: 264 men and 280 women.

Antrim was Ireland country: 38.8% of them (211 people) lived there in 1911. Next came Down (131), Armagh (58), Dublin (28) and Longford (18).

The average Ireland in 1911 was 29.5 years old, 28.8 for men and 30.1 for women; almost exactly in line with the national averages of 29.6 for men and 30.5 for women. That low figure reflects just how many children there were in Edwardian Ireland, along with high infant mortality and the limits of public health at the time. For comparison, average life expectancy in Ireland today is around 83.
Ireland literacy in 1911
Of the Irelands whose literacy was recorded, 85% could both read and write, 2.6% could read but not write, and 12.4% could do neither. The figures were much the same for men and women. Bear in mind these figures include young children; the census itself only counted people aged nine and over when calculating illiteracy, on the grounds that it was unfair to label a child illiterate before they'd had a chance to learn.
Ireland common first names
The most common male names were John (31), James, William, Robert and Thomas. For women it was Mary (22), followed by Sarah, Elizabeth, Ellen and Annie.
Ireland occupations in 1911
The most common entry on an Ireland's census form was "Scholar"; 20% (109) were children at school. Among the rest, the most common occupations were farmer (9.2%), textile worker (8.8%), general labourer (3.9%) and metal worker / engineer (3.1%). Grouped by sector, textiles & clothing accounted for 12.3% of all Irelands, followed by agriculture, general labourers and metal & engineering.
What religion is Ireland?
The largest religious group among Irelands was Anglican, at 43%. The remainder were mostly Presbyterian (42.3%), Roman Catholic (10.1%), Methodist (2.8%) and Unitarian (0.4%).
