That low figure reflects just how many children there were in Edwardian Ireland, along with high infant mortality and the limits of public health at the time. For comparison, average life expectancy in Ireland today is around 83.
Jackman literacy in 1911
Of the Jackmans whose literacy was recorded, 76.2% could both read and write, 2.1% could read but not write, and 21.8% could do neither. Women came out slightly ahead, 78.6% reading and writing against 74.4% of men. Bear in mind these figures include young children; the census itself only counted people aged nine and over when calculating illiteracy, on the grounds that it was unfair to label a child illiterate before they'd had a chance to learn.

Among the rest, the most common occupations were farm labourer (10.2%), farmer (9.8%), domestic servant (4.1%) and general labourer (3.7%). Grouped by sector, agriculture accounted for 20.7% of all Jackmans, followed by domestic service, general labourers and retail & commerce.

Jackmans were overwhelmingly Roman Catholic, 93.5% of them. The remainder were mostly Anglican (4.5%), Plymouth Brethren (0.4%) and Unitarian (0.4%).
