The 1911 Census recorded 98 people named Jane in Ireland; roughly one in every 45,000 people carried the name. There were noticeably more women than men recorded: 87 women to 10 men. (A small number, 1, had no sex recorded.)

Antrim had the largest share of Janes, 23.5% (23 people). Next came Down (22), Dublin (16), Cork (10) and Louth (5).

The average Jane in 1911 was 32.4 years old, 28.2 for men and 32.9 for women; slightly older than the national averages of 29.6 for men and 30.5 for women. That low figure reflects just how many children there were in Edwardian Ireland, along with high infant mortality and the limits of public health at the time. For comparison, average life expectancy in Ireland today is around 83.
Jane literacy in 1911
Of the Janes whose literacy was recorded, 84.4% could both read and write, 5.2% could read but not write, and 10.4% could do neither. Bear in mind these figures include young children; the census itself only counted people aged nine and over when calculating illiteracy, on the grounds that it was unfair to label a child illiterate before they'd had a chance to learn.

The most common male names were John (2), Alfred, David, Edward and George. For women it was Mary (4), followed by Ellen, Bruce, Clarke and Julia.
Jane occupations in 1911
The most common entry on a Jane's census form was "Scholar"; 15.3% (15) were children at school. Among the rest, the most common occupations were domestic servant (12.2%), textile worker (4.1%), clergy / religious (2%) and dressmaker / milliner (2%). Grouped by sector, domestic service accounted for 15.3% of all Janes, followed by textiles & clothing, professional and agriculture.
What religion is Jane?
The largest religious group among Janes was Roman Catholic, at 49%. The remainder were mostly Anglican (23.5%), Presbyterian (21.4%), Methodist (3.1%) and Congregationalist (1%).
