Of the Jefferses whose literacy was recorded, 78.1% could both read and write, 3.4% could read but not write, and 18.5% could do neither. The figures were much the same for men and women. Bear in mind these figures include young children; the census itself only counted people aged nine and over when calculating illiteracy, on the grounds that it was unfair to label a child illiterate before they'd had a chance to learn.

Among the rest, the most common occupations were farmer (11.1%), general labourer (4%), farm labourer (2.9%) and textile worker (2.9%). Grouped by sector, agriculture accounted for 14.2% of all Jefferses, followed by textiles & clothing, domestic service and general labourers.

The largest religious group among Jefferses was Roman Catholic, at 44.5%. The remainder were mostly Anglican (26.9%), Presbyterian (17.5%), Methodist (4%) and Plymouth Brethren (1.9%).
