The Jesses were heavily concentrated in Down, home to 77% of them (184 people). Next came Antrim (52), Dublin (1), Kerry (1) and Westmeath (1).

That low figure reflects just how many children there were in Edwardian Ireland, along with high infant mortality and the limits of public health at the time. Of the Jesses whose literacy was recorded, 73.9% could both read and write, 9.8% could read but not write, and 16.2% could do neither. The figures were much the same for men and women. Bear in mind these figures include young children; the census itself only counted people aged nine and over when calculating illiteracy, on the grounds that it was unfair to label a child illiterate before they'd had a chance to learn.

The most common male names were John (14), William, Samuel, James and Joseph. For women it was Mary (13), followed by Sarah, Minnie, Jane and Margaret.

The most common entry on a Jess's census form was "Scholar"; 19.7% (47) were children at school. Among the rest, the most common occupations were textile worker (12.1%), general labourer (7.5%), farmer (5.9%) and farm labourer (5.4%). Grouped by sector, textiles & clothing accounted for 17.6% of all Jesses, followed by agriculture, general labourers and domestic service.
What religion is Jess?
Most Jesses, 55.6%, were Anglican. The remainder were mostly Presbyterian (35.6%), Plymouth Brethren (2.5%), Roman Catholic (2.1%) and Baptist (1.3%).
