Joy in 1911 Ireland
The 1911 Census recorded 419 people named Joy in Ireland; roughly one in every 10,000 people carried the name. The name was split fairly evenly between men and women: 216 men and 202 women. (A small number, 1, had no sex recorded.)
Counties with Joy in Ireland
The Joys were heavily concentrated in Kerry, home to 58% of them (243 people). Next came Waterford (75), Tipperary (23), Dublin (22) and Down (11).
Joy average age in 1911
The average Joy in 1911 was 31.4 years old, 29.0 for men and 34.0 for women; slightly older than the national averages of 29.6 for men and 30.5 for women. That low figure reflects just how many children there were in Edwardian Ireland, along with high infant mortality and the limits of public health at the time. For comparison, average life expectancy in Ireland today is around 83.
Joy literacy in 1911
Of the Joys whose literacy was recorded, 73.4% could both read and write, 2.2% could read but not write, and 24.1% could do neither. The figures were much the same for men and women. Bear in mind these figures include young children; the census itself only counted people aged nine and over when calculating illiteracy, on the grounds that it was unfair to label a child illiterate before they'd had a chance to learn.
Joy common first names
The most common male names were John (36), James, Michael, Patrick and Thomas; the same five names that topped the list nationally. For women it was Mary (44), followed by Bridget, Catherine, Kate and Margaret.
Joy occupations in 1911
The most common occupation among Joys was farmer, 18.1% of them (76 people). Next came scholar / student (15.5%), general labourer (6%), domestic servant (5.3%) and farm labourer (4.8%). Grouped by sector, agriculture accounted for 22.9% of all Joys, followed by domestic service, general labourers and textiles & clothing.
What religion is Joy?
Joys were overwhelmingly Roman Catholic, 90.2% of them. The remainder were mostly Anglican (5.5%), Plymouth Brethren (1.9%) and Presbyterian (0.5%).
