That low figure reflects just how many children there were in Edwardian Ireland, along with high infant mortality and the limits of public health at the time. Keaney literacy in 1911
Of the Keaneys whose literacy was recorded, 72.6% could both read and write, 6.1% could read but not write, and 21.3% could do neither. Men came out slightly ahead, 74.3% reading and writing against 71.1% of women. Bear in mind these figures include young children; the census itself only counted people aged nine and over when calculating illiteracy, on the grounds that it was unfair to label a child illiterate before they'd had a chance to learn.

The most common male names were John (33), Patrick, James, Thomas and Michael; the same five names that topped the list nationally. For women it was Mary (40), followed by Bridget, Anne, Annie and Margaret.

The most common occupation among Keaneys was farmer, 23.2% of them (107 people). Next came scholar / student (18.4%), farm labourer (3.7%), domestic servant (2.4%) and shopkeeper / shop assistant / dealer (2.2%). Grouped by sector, agriculture accounted for 27.3% of all Keaneys, followed by domestic service, retail & commerce and general labourers.

Keaneys were overwhelmingly Roman Catholic, 98.7% of them. The remainder were mostly Anglican (0.7%) and Salvation Army (0.2%).
