Of the Kernses whose literacy was recorded, 81.7% could both read and write, 7% could read but not write, and 11.3% could do neither. Women came out slightly ahead, 87.9% reading and writing against 76.3% of men. Bear in mind these figures include young children; the census itself only counted people aged nine and over when calculating illiteracy, on the grounds that it was unfair to label a child illiterate before they'd had a chance to learn.

The most common entry on a Kerns's census form was "Scholar"; 40.8% (29) were children at school. Among the rest, the most common occupations were farmer (9.9%), farm labourer (8.5%), domestic servant (2.8%) and textile worker (2.8%). Grouped by sector, agriculture accounted for 18.3% of all Kernses, followed by domestic service, textiles & clothing and retail & commerce.
What religion is Kerns?
Kernses were predominantly Roman Catholic (73.2%). The remainder were mostly Presbyterian (21.1%) and Anglican (5.6%).
