That low figure reflects just how many children there were in Edwardian Ireland, along with high infant mortality and the limits of public health at the time. For comparison, average life expectancy in Ireland today is around 83.
Kerry literacy in 1911
Of the Kerrys whose literacy was recorded, 79.7% could both read and write, 3.4% could read but not write, and 16.9% could do neither. The figures were much the same for men and women. Bear in mind these figures include young children; the census itself only counted people aged nine and over when calculating illiteracy, on the grounds that it was unfair to label a child illiterate before they'd had a chance to learn.

The most common male names were Michael (6), William, John, James and Patrick. For women it was Bridget (4), followed by Ellen, Mary, Annie and Katie.

The most common entry on a Kerry's census form was "Scholar"; 11.1% (7) were children at school. Among the rest, the most common occupations were farmer (7.9%), farm labourer (6.3%), carpenter / joiner (4.8%) and general labourer (4.8%). Grouped by sector, agriculture accounted for 14.3% of all Kerrys, followed by domestic service, building & construction and general labourers.
What religion is Kerry?
Kerrys were overwhelmingly Roman Catholic, 92.1% of them. The remainder were mostly Anglican (4.8%) and Plymouth Brethren (3.2%).
