Keyes in 1911 Ireland
The 1911 Census recorded 293 people named Keyes in Ireland; roughly one in every 15,000 people carried the name. The name was split fairly evenly between men and women: 142 men and 151 women.
Counties with Keyes in Ireland
Wexford had the largest share of Keyeses, 19.8% (58 people). Next came Limerick (46), Dublin (42), Tipperary (27) and Cork (24).

The average Keyes in 1911 was 28.2 years old, 26.2 for men and 30.0 for women; a touch younger than the national averages of 29.6 for men and 30.5 for women. That low figure reflects just how many children there were in Edwardian Ireland, along with high infant mortality and the limits of public health at the time. For comparison, average life expectancy in Ireland today is around 83.
Keyes literacy in 1911
Of the Keyeses whose literacy was recorded, 80.1% could both read and write, 3.5% could read but not write, and 16.4% could do neither. Men came out slightly ahead, 81.9% reading and writing against 78.5% of women. Bear in mind these figures include young children; the census itself only counted people aged nine and over when calculating illiteracy, on the grounds that it was unfair to label a child illiterate before they'd had a chance to learn.
Keyes common first names
The most common male names were John (22), Thomas, Patrick, William and James. For women it was Mary (26), followed by Bridget, Ellen, Margaret and Elizabeth.
Keyes occupations in 1911
The most common entry on a Keyes's census form was "Scholar"; 23.9% (70) were children at school. Among the rest, the most common occupations were farmer (7.8%), domestic servant (5.8%), farm labourer (4.8%) and general labourer (4.8%). Grouped by sector, agriculture accounted for 13% of all Keyeses, followed by domestic service, general labourers and retail & commerce.
What religion is Keyes?
Keyeses were predominantly Roman Catholic (88.1%). The remainder were mostly Anglican (8.9%) and Presbyterian (2.4%).
