The 1911 Census recorded 250 people named Kielty in Ireland; roughly one in every 18,000 people carried the name. There were noticeably more men than women recorded: 140 men to 110 women.

Roscommon had the largest share of Kieltys, 22% (55 people). Next came Sligo (48), Antrim (33), Wexford (27) and Galway (22).

The average Kielty in 1911 was 32.3 years old, 30.3 for men and 34.8 for women; slightly older than the national averages of 29.6 for men and 30.5 for women. That low figure reflects just how many children there were in Edwardian Ireland, along with high infant mortality and the limits of public health at the time. For comparison, average life expectancy in Ireland today is around 83.
Kielty literacy in 1911
Of the Kieltys whose literacy was recorded, 81.5% could both read and write, 5.5% could read but not write, and 13% could do neither. The figures were much the same for men and women. Bear in mind these figures include young children; the census itself only counted people aged nine and over when calculating illiteracy, on the grounds that it was unfair to label a child illiterate before they'd had a chance to learn.

The most common male names were John (20), James, Patrick, Michael and Thomas; the same five names that topped the list nationally. For women it was Mary (15), followed by Annie, Bridget, Margaret and Kate.

The most common occupation among Kieltys was farmer, 25.6% of them (64 people). Next came scholar / student (18%), general labourer (5.2%), farm labourer (4.4%) and domestic servant (1.2%). Grouped by sector, agriculture accounted for 30.8% of all Kieltys, followed by general labourers, textiles & clothing and domestic service.
What religion is Kielty?
Kieltys were predominantly Roman Catholic (86%). The remainder were mostly Anglican (9.6%) and Presbyterian (2.4%).
